About

Kristin

Kristin's ESL tutoring is for adults (18 or older) only.
If your high school child is well-behaved and wants to learn, that might be okay.

Conversation

We talk, and I help you find the right words and fix your mistakes. You can improve your listening and your speaking, but feel like you're just making a new friend. I do not give homework.

For beginners, we talk about you so you can talk about your life in English. If you don't have trouble talking about your life and things you are interested in, we will talk about things you do not know well. If your English is already good but you want to challenge yourself, we can read short articles about many different topics and discuss them.

Conversation tutoring is a good way to learn about cultural differences, not just English. I will tell you how Americans would probably react to a situation you tell me about. I will always tell you when you say something that has a bad meaning in the U.S. or when you pronounce a word so that it sounds bad. I want to help you be more comfortable in English no matter what personality you have, so I will teach you anything you want or need to know even if it is bad.

Writing

If you want to improve your writing, you will have a lot of homework. You will write in a journal every day (I don't care if what you write is true) and I will correct it at each lesson. During the lesson, I will give you a topic and a time limit and you will write the best answer you can. The homework I give is different for every student depending on his/her skill and goals. If you do what I tell you to do, you will see your writing improve.

Presentation

If you want to work on public speaking, I first suggest you try going to Toastmasters. Find a club near you at www.toastmasters.org and go to a few meetings. Every club is a little different, so maybe try two or three.

I can help with work presentations or presentations/speeches for special occasions. Bring a laptop computer to your lessons for help with MS Powerpoint or other presentation programs. If you want to use software I do not know well, I will learn how to use it so that I can help you better.

We will work on your visual aids (Powerpoint slides, pictures, drawing on a board), your voice, your pronunciation, your posture (how you stand), and even your facial expressions and what to do with your hands. I will help you with tricks to remember what to say and to look like you are not nervous.
